The Amadahy Trail at Carter's Lake
The Woodring Branch Recreation Area’s Amadahy Trail at Carter's Lake is a leisurely 3.6 mile singletrack loop, offering a lush forest canopy, small rocky creek crossings and exceptional views of the beautiful reservoir. With less than 300 feet of elevation gain and descent, it makes for the perfect mountain bike trail for kids or beginner mountain biker of any age. Hikers also enjoy this trail with their dogs. Please respect trail rules and pick up after your pup if you choose to bring Fido along.
Carter's Lake is the deepest reservoir in Georgia with the tallest dam East of the Mississippi River. Amadahy is a Cherokee word meaning forest water. The Amadahy Trail is just a 40-minute drive from Mulberry Gap, making it the perfect morning or afternoon activity for your friends and family. Winding roads and beautiful countryside with rolling hills, vibrant fields of wildflowers, grazing horses and donkeys will make for an enjoyable drive to the trailhead. Pack a lunch and your bathing suit and enjoy a picnic on the clay beach and a dig in the refreshing water after you’re finished with your ride.
Once you arrive at the trailhead, you will have the choice of starting the loop clockwise or counter clockwise. The trail offers solid soil with slightly rooted descents into the wooded areas that eventually open up to Carters Lake. There are a few bridges, one of which offers an amazing view of the dam on the opposite shore of the lake. Don’t forget your camera!
Plan for a 2-hour hike or 1-hour bike ride if you’re moving right along. Give yourself a little playtime if you want to enjoy the scenery, walk to the water’s edge or take photographs. Allow your curiosity to be sparked. Don’t rush the moment. Let your kids be kids and your dogs be dogs. Soak up the sun on a rock, go off path and explore, relax in a hammock by the water, and unwind in the woods. You’ll love every moment.
