We will be having our Florida winter mountain bike tour again this March. This year, we are adding a day at San Felasco Hammock State Park. This is a welcome addition to the miles of single track and wild assortment of manmade trail elements that Santos/Vortex has to offer. San Felasco is unique in Florida because of the elevation caused by a collection of ridges. Although they are modest, they provide great downhill speed on winding trails in an old oak forest. There are over 25 miles of total trail in the park, some of which is also traverse through grazing meadows for beautiful views. Horses and hikers also enjoy the unusual elevations. Although Santos/Vortex and San Felasco are only an hour apart, there are significant differences in the eco systems. Santos/Vortex doesn’t have the ridges, but it makes it up in quarries and leftover scars from the Florida Canal construction. San Felasco really rolls and doesn’t have palm trees, which makes it feel very un-Florida, but it will still be warmer than everywhere else!
The first day will be spent in the Santos/Vortex areas seeing the best trails that the trail systems have to offer. John Brown, the Vortex, and Rattlesnake Ridge are just some of the few challenging trails that bikers will try out. Bikers will also get to see the trail elements created by famed indoor mountain bike trail designer Ray Petro. The trail elements range from simple and fun to downright terrifying (see Papa Bear). The second day will then go to San Felasco. The third day will be the great 50-mile Greenway trail. Riders can either go 25 and stop or turn around for bragging rights! The epic ride will go through oak woods, pine woods, canal scars, and dry meadow. Most of it will be finely groomed single track!
As with all Mulberry Gap tours, the food will be top notch. There is a bike shop located just outside of the entrance of the Santos trailhead for last minute maintenance and bike rental. This year, we will also be offering tent and sleeping bag rental along with airport shuttles from Tampa Airport.
